City of Akishima Mayor’s Cup

On Saturday 25th October 10 teams gathered at Tsujiagoaka-Minami School to take part in the inaugural Akishima Mayor’s Cup.

The competition, part of the Japan Cricket Association Cricket Blast program, and Vice Mayor Sato-san was present to hand over the trophy to the winning team.

The day was played in perfect weather conditions and each team had four matches in the group stage, lasting around 45 minutes per game. It was soon clear that the top team from local school Hiajima were going to be a force to be reckoned with, along with the top team from the visiting Indian school.

Indeed, after four matches these teams both had 100% win records and so would meet each other in the final. However there were also impressive performances from Tamagawa and the hosts Tsujiagoaka, while the visiting team from Fuji, making their first appearance at the competition, were enjoying the atmosphere and chance to play the game.

The final was a repeat of the School Cup played back in May, but this time the result was very different. Haijima batted first and made their intentions clear with a six from the first ball, and went on to score 102 from their six overs. While the Indian school were able to hit a few big strikes, the game was beyond them when the 4th over was bowled without conceding a single run – surely a first in Cricket Blast!

Finishing on 64 meant Haijima Zeus (as they had called themselves for the day!) got their revenge and held up the trophy for the first time.

The competition will hopefully encourage new people to come into the sport and the first round of the Cricket Blast Series will happen on Sunday 9th November at Kemei School. All are welcome.
